Designed to make the most of the beautiful scenery and wonderful mountain vistas, the superb Mont Blanc Express offers one of the best railway journeys on offer in the Alps. Our journey on the tourist line begins in the small Swiss town of Martigny. On departure, the line begins a gentle ascent, passing through the neat rows of vineyards which line the fields running down to the tracks.
The historic Montenvers Railway (Mer de Glace train) takes you on a remarkable ascent into the heart of the Mont Blanc massif. First opened in 1908, this iconic red cogwheel train was a pioneering feat of Alpine engineering, designed to make the high mountains accessible to early travellers. From Chamonix, it climbs steeply through forests, cliffs and dramatic valleys revealing ever-changing mountain scenery along the way. At the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of the Mer de Glace, France's largest glacier, where a dramatic high-mountain landscape unfolds before you. A remarkable blend of history, engineering and natural wonder, it's a highlight of any visit to the region.
